This is one of the most debated questions by aspiring writers, and it can get downright hostile. Truth is, they are both important. A story has to be compelling to keep the interest of the reader, especially the readers who have the power to recommend your screenplay to an agent or production company. This is why learning the craft of screenwriting is also very important. Nothing screams "amateur" louder than a improperly formatted screenplay.
